"I have a 1997 50hp 4 stroke (model F50TLHV), the starter will not engage the flywheel, the battery is good and the stop switch lanyard is connected. If someone thinks the starter shaft needs greasing, what type of grease is used and exactly how do you go about greasing the shaft? Do you need to take the starter out or can you grease it while still mounted to the engine."

It sounds like the starter needs to be rebuilt or replaced. I had the same type of problem with an old Merc.

"try lubing the shaft first...try some LPS #2, very similar in consistency to Wd40, thin enough to get down where grease cant get to and free it up...worth a shot before rebuilding it"
