My 1986 Mercruiser 350 V-8 (260 0A400584) shows two starters for two flywheels (12 3/4 & 14 dia) in all the parts listings. Is there an easy way to check the dia? Is there a better method? I think this was also the year they changed the rear main. I would also like to ID the rear main. Thanks

Regardless of the year, the starter motor required (for a 153 tooth or a 168 tooth ring gear) will be defined by the attaching bolt pattern. I. E., staggered or straight across!

Suggestion:
Dont spend one dime on anything other than a HTGR/PMGR starter motor!

How do you tell which is which, some are only sold by flywheel size? & and are the mentioned starter motors better than Merc OEM?

Ayuh,..... Feel the bolts on yer starter,..... Are they straight across, of staggered fore, 'n aft,..?? yer flywheel matches that pattern,.....

The new style starters Rick mentions are 1/2 the weight, 'n nearly twice the power,.....
You could probably buy a Merc branded one, but I wouldn't when aftermarket is 1/2 the price, 'n probably equal quality,....
I get mine from Conrel, through my local Napa,...

The block castin' number on the top of the aft block flange will tell ya whether it's a 2 pc. or 1 pc. seal,.....
