This is my first boat and I am needing to replace the starter solenoid. my question is, my mercury 65hp is a 1965 year model. the oem starter solenoid i have found for about 120.00 dollarsit is obsolete. but on my engine the solenoid looks like a newer version, so is it possible for me to put a newer solenoid on it. from the pictures i have seen the two look identical.

Solenoids are generally problem free.----------------What is happening that makes you think it is " bad "-------------Just helping to maybe save you some pennies.

it is energizing once then nothing, remove the battery post wait about 20m min, and once again it clicks once then nothing.
I tested with a meter and when the key is engaged i am getting 12 volts to the solenoid, the battery is showing a full charge and when the solenoid went out on the lake, I used the trolling motor to get us back to the ramp, the trolling motor also registered the battery as a full charge. I checked my fuses every thing seems to be in place and in working order. once again I am getting 12 volts to the solenoid just wont crank is all.
