"I have a 1990 150 hp Johnson that has a starter problem. If the motor sits for awhile, say over six hours, when I go to start it the starter gear does not engage the flywheel. Kind of like it has a weak battery. It will do this several times then sometimes engage, turn the motor over slowly, then the motor starts and after that the starter gear engages with no problem. Sometimes I remove the cowling and run the gear up by hand, the motor turns over slow but when started the starter engages without a problem. Do you think the starter needs to be overhauled or is there a bad connection that could cause this? Thanks John"

"Hi... Make sure ALL connections are clean and good and tight..this includes the ground wire. Start at the battery and work forward...when satisfied all is well there, and starter still drags..rebuild or replace...."

"You guys are quick.
IBN the battery is new but a load test would be prudent.
Tom, I did go over the connections but will do that again.
Funny how it would drag but once started jumps right up.
Thanks,
John"

"ISBN, Coosa and Carl, I replied but I guess I didn't post properly. Thanks for responding. Sat. June the 30th we went to a fireworks display by the boat. Everything was fine until we wanted to leave and the starter would not turn the motor over fast enough. We broke down a line and tried to start by hand with no success, however, it did something and the starter started the engine. Mon. the 2nd I took the starter to P&H in Eastpoint, md. at 10:00 am and at 1:15 pm they called and said it was ready and the amount due was $59. Great service and pricing. I put it on the motor and everything seems to be great. Thanks for your replies. John"
