"I'm sure that this has been discussed somewhere but so far my searches have only turned up warnings about the danger from the spring...
How does one replace the rope?
Does it involve messing around with the spring? (The rewind part seems to work OK, just the rope is broken)
Will I end up in the ER if I disassemble the starter assembly without a helmet and body armor?
If there is a discussion of this could someone point me to it?
THANX!"

"FYI for anyone who like me has never taken one of these things apart: Nothing goes SPROING when you remove this assembly (if the spring was broken, I suppose that it might) and the disassembly process is obvious and easy with the exception of the above post which saved me time and effort.
It IS worth taking pictures as you pull apart the mechanism so that the parts can be oriented properly during re-assembly.
I'm still puzzling on how the rope threads into the pulley ..."

You wind up the pulley and spring. You then feed the rope into the pulley and out the cover. Let the pulley go and the rope retracts.

"I have a question. I don't have a manual (I will order one tonight), but I wanted to also replace a pull rope on a 25hp 1985 Mariner. When you say you feed the rope into the pulley and out the cover, do you mean feed the rope through the cover to the pulley and tie the knot in the pulley, then let the pulley go and the rope retracts. The only question I have was how to hold the pulley in the "wound" up phase while you thread the rope.

Also, when the assembly is placed back on the top, should the gear be positioned in any certain location. For instance I see markings which are probably used to test the timing, and I was wondering if a certain location was best for starting the motor. I am new, very new at this but am learning as I go.

Thanks in advance. Yes, I am a computer nerd out of their element!"
