Starter relay connections?

Hi all

I have a 1987 Mariner 75Hp (model 7075412N) outboard. Recently it wouldn’t turn-over and I discovered that the starter motor relay needed to be replaced. I took photos and removed the wires and put the new relay in place. It turns out that my photography and memory are a complete fail!

There are 3 wires which I am unsure what to do with, a yellow, yellow/Red, and a short black which is currently not connected at either end (hopefully the diagram is clear).

I assume the control terminals need a negative (short black wire to earth), and at least one of the yellow wires on the other terminal, but both?

Does anyone know how these connections should be made?

On Mercurys the Yellow with red stripe is the energizing voltage from the control box. The black connects to metal that is in contact with the black battery wire.....either directly to the engine block or to a metallic mounting plate which is connected to the engine block for ground. ON which goes where, I don't remember if it matters...some solenoids it doesn't. If it doesn't work reverse the two leads.

2 Solid yellow colored wires are used to bring the battery charging AC voltage from the stator to the regulator/rectifier module. There is no solid yellow connected to the starting terminal, nor used anywhere else on Mercs.

Possibly it would be a tiller engine start wire remaining within the confines of the engine prewired for tiller options....might leave it off and if everything works leave it loose and secured somehow. Don't know but I'd do what I suggested and you might come back with the results....may be something a PO installed for some other function.

Today I Connected the yellow/red as you suggested, and the black on the other side, to an earthed bolt. The engine turns over good and strong now so I'm now supplying the relay coil ok. Unfortunately it didn't show any hint of starting. I then connected the yellow wire to the same pin as the yellow/red and got the same result.

So, now it's likely that there is something else I need to figure out, but it seems that my question about the starter relay has been answered.

I feel bad churning the engine over in this way. Do I need to be concerned about the cylinders not getting lubrication from the fuel-oil mix when it's not running. Is there something I can do when I know it's going to need to churn over for a while like that?

There should be lots of oil in the engine from when it ran last.------Certainly plenty to look after parts while cranking it over.-----As I have said many times the concept of lubrication in 2 strokes is not well understood.
 
Reassuring FYI, without the heat of combustion even a 4 stroke engine can spin for a long time without problems and as racerone has said there is plenty of oil on the cylinder walls since oil comes along with the fuel and doesn't rely on splash oiling.
