My 1976 Evinrude 55 hp clicks

My 1976 Evinrude 55 hp clicks from the rectifier when I try to start it. It has new stator and the shop gave me a used rectifier for half price and said it came from a good motor. It has a bad powerpack (the rpms fluxuate when throttle is steady)and a new one is in the mail; could the powerpack cause the starter to not work to?

"I cannot find the starter sol

"I cannot find the starter solenoid, is it inside the starter or is it part of the rectifier? The battery is strong and the battery cables are good. Can I hook the battery cables directly to the starter motor to see if the starter works or would I fry something? Thanks, Louis"

"The rectifier has nothing to

"The rectifier has nothing to do with the starter solenoid. Find the biggest wire on the starter and follow it down. It will terminate on the starter solenoid. Yes, you can momentarily jump the battery to the starter for testing."
