Starter Problem

"'74-135HP. Turned key (battery good)and all I got was a click. Had a look at what was going on, when key is turned the starter gear comes to life for a split second, maybe does a 12th of a revolution (that is the starter not the flywheel.

I guess the obvious culprit is the starter motor itself, I have read in other threads of "jumping" the starter motor, this should confirm if the starter is the fault or if it is something else. Question is, to jump the starter motor, is it as simple as a cable straight from the battery or is there somthing else I should do to avoid damage to motor \ myself. thanks dm."
