Starter - problem after winter

I own a 1996 Cobalt 220 with Mercruiser

I just took my boat out of storage and the starter appears bad. Seemed when tech banged on starter it would work.Was told this could be water in the starter ( Does this cause make sense?) , any advise on how to check, fix or prevent this problem.

yes this makes sense id take apart the starter and clean and oil it and put back together and back on. It could also be something else like bearings are bad and about to lock up but when u disassemble it you will see what is going on weather rust build up or bearings are bad most likely water caused rust and is creating it not to turn well
