I have a 1985 9.9 HP Johnson Model number 10RCOM that did not run when I purchased it (cheap). Along with all the rebuilds/replacement of various components, the spring on the starter needed a few turns to tighten up some slack in the rope.
Behind the pull start assembly there is a red starter pawl with a spring and I'm not sure where or if the long part of the spring anchors/attaches. It is just kind of hanging there.
I'll try to get a pic later, but decided to post this now in case someone knows what I am talking about without the pic.
