Starter not engaging

"Maybe a dumb question, I've got a 1994 120 Johnson.. the starter recently started just spinning instead of engaging,I can pop it up with a screwdriver and start it but it won't engage on its own. ,checked battery and leads,, all ok,, is this a bad starter or just a bad solenoid?"

"Sounds more like a sticking bendix gear. This is usually caused by grease/oil collecting dirt which in turn results in binding.

Try cleaning that bendix area with WD-40. That normally cures that type problem.
