Starter not disengaging

"I have an '89 5.7L Mercruiser. When the engine starts, it makes a grinding sound similar to when you try to start an engine that's already running. It appears to release after a second or so, but it can't be a good thing.

I am assuming that the starter is not disengaging when I release the key. Anybody got any good ideas on where to start diagnosing this? Is this most likely a mechanical or electrical problem?"

My 1st Guess is,....
The Starter is getting Funky,+ Probably needs replacing or rebuilding......

You can Meter the Excite circuit,+ see if it's working properly......."

"How hard of a job is it to replace a starter? They seem cheap enough to just replace it and see if that fixes the problem.

I just went out and looked and I couldn't even see the starter. Unfortunately, it's the port side engine so there's not much room to operate between the engines. Would I need to pull the exhaust manifolds to do this? I did just get through replacing the spark plugs which had been rusted in for about ten years. So there is some room to work in between them.

I have the Seloc manual and they don't even talk about replacing a starter. They do have several thousand "good words" about repairing one once you've gotten it out though."

"

You do need to get down there with tools. Don't think the manifold needs to come off. Once you get the wires off the solinoid, i think there are only two large 9/16 head hex bolts and a bracket. Its do-able. Don't do a thing without taking the batteries out of the circuit."

"OK, so I still haven't been able to see much of the starter, but I can feel around and there seems to be a pretty good amount of room to work. I ran a camera down there and took this shot. Obviously, I have some questions, or I wouldn't be posting here...

Bad Starter"">

1. Are those the mounting bolts? If so, it looks like they are offset with two long bolts.

2. Is the missing bolt and separated plate part of the starter? If not, what is that how hard is it to fix :)

3. The open hole with the crap hanging out seems to be part of #2. Should there be a cover over this?

Sorry for posting the picture, but sometimes, a picture is worth..."

"Ayuh,...... Those 2 are the starter Bolts,.....
There might possibly be a small angle bracket at the forward end of the starter too......
And, of course the Wires.....

The Plate with the missing bolt is nothing but a tin shield covering the Flywheel.......
The missing bolt is I believe an inch long 1/4"-20 bolt.......

The Really Ugly Crap absolutely Doesn't belong there,.......
It might have Something to do with your Starter Issue......."
