"Hey guys, just ran into this.

Was starting a Merc 5.7 Litre/Alpha One drive that has sat for 8 months. After replacing the fuel pump (electric) and fuel filter assembly and rebuilding the Mercarb, I finally got it to run well.

Here lies my problem: When cranking, there is a god awfull sound coming from the engine. Once she starts up, it is quiet and normal.

I did a compression check on her and my cylinders were at 135-145 except for two at 100psi.

With all the plugs out, she still cranked over very loud. Almost sounded like metal to metal.

I am assuming we have a starter bearing that is going out. Never heard this before.

Also, what do you think about the compression? I found it to be a bit low. New engine is about 220 psi. I'm guessing leaky risers have gotten salt water into the valve train and possibly into the cylinders."

"The compression isn't too

"The compression isn't too bad. I think she has a few more seasons in her. The starter, on the other hand is toast. See my similar recent thread."

If the two at a 100 psi are next to each other, check for a blown head gasket.
A common rule of thumb, is that a 15% variance on cylinders, is not good.

"Bert, thanks for that. Great point.
What would be a good source for a tool to perform a leakdown test?"

"Bulit7;
You can get stuff to do a cylinder leakage test at Autozone or NAPA.
All you want to do is put a few psi pressure in the questionalble cylinder and list to the adjacent plug holes.

You need to keep the piston at TDC on the firing stroke, so you need a helper to hold the damper pulley nut steady with a socket and a breaker bar. An extension pipe on the breaker bar is also a good idea to get more leverage.

What Rod writes. Myself, I was trained doing a dynamic cylinder test using a compression gauge with the throttle wide open.
I've done the leak down on Aircraft, but it seems one gets the needed results, with much less equipment doing it dynamically.
