"The solenoid on my starter mo

"The solenoid on my starter motor quit and I ordered a new one from Marine Engine. While waiting for solenoid, I decided to pull starter apart, clean it and replace brushes. Got it done and buttoned up this morning. Attached 12 volt battery charger to check out work. Starter spins great but will not rise. Is the solenoid needed to make it rise.

The solenoid is not needed to make it rise. You need to hook the starter up to a good 12 volt battery and then if the starter is good it will rise.

"If that's a prestolite starter, it's easy to install the brushes wrong which make the starter run in the opposite direction.

Looking directly down at the bendix gear, it should turn in a counter clockwise direction."
