Starter motor nut

I have a 1989 25 hp Johnson with electric start. The spring on the starter motor that pushes the gear down when the starter in not powered is broken into two pieces. The starter still works but I figure I should replace it. I got a new spring and nut but what I can't figure out is how to get the old nut off. If I jam something in between the starter gear and the fly wheel and then take the nut off will that work? do I torch the nut first or take a nut cracker to it?

I know that most folks today live in the " instant fix " world.----So remove the bracket and remove starter from bracket.------------You will find a hex on the bottom of the drive to use a second wrench.---------That would be the way to do it without heat / hammers / chisels.---------No risk of damaging the expensive starter !

Quick method...... Use a hand held air impact wrench to remove the old nut... Slip on the spring, Put a little "LocTite" on the nut threads, thread the nut on by hand to avoid possible cross threading, finish tightening the nut with the air impact wrench.
