"Is it possible to get starter

"Is it possible to get starter motor brushes? My 350 starter has packed up but on removing and stripping it, all that is wrong is the brushes. They are not worn just that the holders are corroded but the rest of the motor is perfect. I know it's cheap enough for you guys to pick up a starterin the USA but over here in UK some dealers want $400 for a starter. I got it working but would prefer to put new ones in if I'm going out to sea, which I often do. Thanks Guys."

"Even more expensive over here

"Even more expensive over here, in Denmark. You might get one from US eBay. VAT & TAX applies on import to the EU, but still a good deal.

Alternatively turn to the local car electrician workshop. They can provide brushes and/or overhaul the starter completely. Remember to tell it's for marine use."

Just a suggestion. Undercut the mica between the commutator bars when doing the brushes.

"Thanks Bert. I did that. Took me back to my apprentice days rebuilding starters and alternators, among other things. Just need to get some brushes now."

Over here we can bring the starter to a rebuild shop and they can replace the brushes while you wait. Do you have anything like that over there?

"Oh come on Dave, now your just showing off and making me feel even worse. I just wish we did have something like that here. Mind you, good idea for a business..."

Yes Bert. You said it. I hate this throw away and replace situation that the world is in. I would rather spend the time repairing it properly than just discarding it. Gives you a sense of acheivement as well.

We can get the fix "while

We can get the fix "while you wait" too.

Regarding repair vs. replace: We used to see inventions that came as a solution to a need. Nowadays solutions come first - next the manufacturer has to invent the need.

Weird World.
