Starter gear grinding on flywheel bottom at high rev 4000 rpm

1984 evinrude E35ELCRR 35 hp. Once the boat is started and under way, the starter gear spins up and grinds on the underside of the flywheel. Right at about 4000 rpm. How do I adjust the spring tensioner to eliminate the problem ? I recall having to adjust the unit when changing it out but, for the life of me can’t remember how. Any advice appreciated.
