Starter dead on 150 HP Merc

"Have a 2004, 150 HP, Nitro XRS series. Starter went dead. Before I pull the starter is there any other thing to be checked which would / could be causing the problem?"
 
Have you tried jumping the sol

Have you tried jumping the solenoid? Verified you are getting 12V to it when trying to start?
