Starter Bendix

I have a 1993 Evinrude 200 horse and a 1990 Johnson 40 horse. Both of the starter bendix will unlock ( kick out, or spin out ) when trying to start the motors. Not all the time, but they are getting worse. Are they like a starter bendix on a car starter. Where the one way clutch is going bad? And easly replaced? Both starter motors crank fine. Battery voltage is 12.5 for both. Just replacing the bendix on the starters are not to costly and an easy fix. What about the spring above the bendix? If you start replacing to many parts in an old starter might as well buy a new one. But both starters together will be about 400 bucks. Just want to replace the bendix to save a little money. Thoughs Thanks Mike
 
A couple of sayings come to mind, Cant drink beer swlmming, Cant get out and walk. If I had one layiug around I'd probably chuck it on but spend me money on a new one.

Why can't you drink beer when swimming? That is absolute crazy talk and I will have none of it!

They are similar to Bendix gears on cars when car starters were the Bendix type rather than the modern pre-engage type. They don't have a 1 way clutch

They must move freely. Clean and very very very lightly lubricate if they dont. Check for any burrs that might make them stick.

IYTWF that the 200hp starter also has a reduction gear.

Refer to the engine parts diagrams on this site.

12.5 volts suggests your batteries are not fully charged or are past their prime. Charge them until they read 12.7 after resting for 12 hours. If you cannot get them up to a rested voltage of 12.6 or better they are probably near their life end

Make sure your motors are in top condition when starting. If you have something wrong in the motor when starting it will kick the Bendix out and won't keep running as it should.
 
If the starter/s are kicking out too early??? that means they are getting weak and need a rebuild or replaced.
If the bendix engages at all and the shaft doesn't spin like a hub spun on a prop, then the bendix is probably good.
Inside the bendix is a rubber hub that weakens with time or if it gets oil or grease up inside that makes it slip.
Buying replacements: the internet is packed with Chinese JUNK just make sure you have a way to get your $$$ returned, I use a service like Paypal.

What is the definition of a rebuild?Brushes I know but what else?
