Starter Alternatives

I have a 1994 454 Mercruiser that cranks very slowly. Chances are I may have a bad starter. If I have to replace it I was wondering if there is a better alternative to the stock starter?? Anybody have any experience on this subject?

You could start with a new/rebuilt starter but it could also be :
bad battery cables
battery cable ends, internal battery cable corrosion
bad connection at the neg block connection corrosion or rust
corroded connection at the starter main post

The starter is a rebuild that was put on in 2003. I have cleaned all the connections to the batteries and the starter solenoid, some of which did have at least some oxidization. Now I only have the main grounds to the motor left to do ( in a bit#ch of a spot to remove and clean) then I will retest but will be out of town a couple days.
