starter 84 90 hp johnson

When I attempt to start the motor the starter spins but does not always engage. If I turn the starter by hand and raise the gear up it starts every time. This boat has been sitting for about 8 years in a garage. Starts and idles good on hose. Am I looking at a new starter or maybe a good cleaning and lube the bendix.

clean and lube but only use a drop or two of oil..you dont want oil down in the starter...also make sure the battery is fully charged and connections clean...
