starter will try to turn a little. I tried to jump start with charger, no luck. do i need a starter and how hard is it to change my self.

I don't think a modern charger will work in trying to turn a starter; you need to hook up a good battery using the negative jumper wire to a metal part of the motor and the positive wire to the starter terminal. If starter works fine; you need to look at your battery terminals both ends on your boat battery make sure they are clean and tight and the battery is fully charged. If no joy with the starter take it off and carry it to a starter/generator shop for repair. Don't lnow your engine but taking a starter off is not that difficult; just think on what you are doing before you do it. Others souldchime n also. Good luck

I just looked at the parts break down and all you do is pull the starter bracket off of the stbd side of the motor and the starter comes with it. Simple.

Simple that is, until you get to that big front bolt. You may find a few new cuss words before you get it out without pulling the flywheel. But yes, it can be done. Don't be tempted to leave it "sort-of" tight when you put it back either.
