" Thanks for all your info to me in the past and on other posted threads I find them very helpful! My question today regards my starter. When starting my motor the starter spins engages and turns the flywheel and motor over for several revolutions and then spins out. I cannot get it to crank the engine continuously like when starting a car. From a previous posting I understand that 15 seconds is the most you would want to have a continuous crank, but I can't even get that.THe starter engages turns the motor over several times and then spins out.I have a new battery, and also did the jumper cable bypass to see if my batery cable was corroded. This produced the same spinout. The motor starts (when it wants to)but if it doesn't start right of way and the spinout occurs I think flooding occurs after several continuous spinouts. If I let it sit for a couple days and can get the motor to turn over without a spinout it will start. If I get the spin it puts me in the same "flooded" condition.

Is the spinout supposed to occur or is it a sign that my starter is weak, or could it be something else youve seen.

Thanks for any info. "

"J..... When you say "Spin

"J..... When you say "Spinout", I'm uncertain as to what you mean.

1 - The engine could be attempting to start, which would "kick" the bendix gear away from the flywheel. If this is the case, you will have to determine why the engine is firing, attempting to start, but not following through.
Check the compression... it should be approx 100lbs and even on all cylinders. The spark, with the s/plugs out should jump a 1/4" gap on all cylinders. The carbs should not flood when the fuel primer bulb is pressurized. Something would need to be wrong for the engine to kick the bendix out.

Also... check the top of the bendix gear for excessive wear. If those teeth are torn up, worn bad etc, it could be kicking itself out of the flywheel.

2 - Or you could mean that the starter continues to spin as it should and the bendix gear is still lodged in the flywheel teeth, but the bendix gear is not turning the flywheel. This second scenario is possible, and does happen often, as there is a clutch type affair within the barrel portion of the bendix gear assy... the clutch wears out and slips, and the bendix just sits there!

Unfortunately that bendix gear which is OMC part #384785 (if a prestolite starter) has not been available since 1990, and at that time had a list price of $60.00.
