Start in Gear Protection

I have a 1982, 9.8hp, Mercury Outboard. It's a great engine. It is, as most of you know, it is a manual/pull cord start.

Last summer I discovered the 'start-in-gear-protection' is broken. Is this a simple repair that I should attempt, or will I have to take it to a dealer?

The kill switch is also out due to corroded wires, which I will replace myself.

I'm assuming these are unrelated problems. I would appreciate any advice. I'm handy but not experienced with outboard repair.

PS - I may have sent another message on this same problem. If I did, I apologize - I'm new at this.

Why fix it? It's just Nanny State nonsense rammed down our throats by the dopey, over bearing Feds.

Jeff

PS: If that motor is flooded one day, and you can't get her started at idle, you'll appreciate having the ability to give her a bunch of gas to get her going.

fix the kill switch wiring and both problem may be solved...

the importance of the ''start in gear'' will depend on what the motor is used for...if used for a kicker on a boat like fastjeff runs I would agree with him...but if used as the primary motor on a small boat it is something that needs to be fixed...

here is an example of what happens...1...motor starts to die...either at startup or up and running...2...reflex of the operator is to open the throttle...motor dies...3...operator is concerned about why motor died and forgets it in gear with wot..4..he pumps bulb or chokes and stands up and pull the rope..5..motor starts and operator goes in drink...

I agree a careless operator might get wet, but it's not V-6!

Virtually EVERY OB motor for half a century was started in gear, since there was no neutrals. Of course, this was not a Nanny state back then...
