I have a 64 Johnson 3 horse. starts fine and runs with choke on, but when I try to take the choke off, it stalls immediately. ive had the carb off and cleaned it a couple times as I thought there might have been sediment in the tank. tanks clean and carb is clean. idk what is wrong.

What is the history on this motor ?---Did it sit for the last 30 years ?----Does spark jump a gap of 5/16" , yes or no ?

Is this at idle or other? You are sure your jets are all clear?Did you check or replace fuel pump?Did you check compression and spark?

Pull the carb and lightly surface the flange on a glass table with 120 grit paper. Just pull it in one direction only until it all shines the same. Then install a new gasket and pull it down snug do not overtighten it down. Turn the slow needle in until lightly seated and back out 1 1/4 turns and turn the high speed needle out 3/4 turn from lightly seated.

Remove the sintered metallic filter which is screwed into the bottom of the tank where it meets the fuel line. Back wash it with spray type carburetor cleaner. Are you sure of the year of manufacture. What is the model number. Does it have an adjustable or a fixed high speed jet? If it is a fixed jet, be sure it is totally clear. Is the #36 gasket in place?

Torch tip cleaners are useful for cleaning a clogged jets. A complete set cost less than 10 dollars. 31MpoipbgfL._AC_US160_.jpg

It's a JW-19M. No high speed jet. I will check the filter tomorrow and see if it helps. Tightening the packing nut didn't help.

Unsure off the history. Purchased it several weeks ago. Ran fine after cleaning the nozzle. Tried to fire it yesterday for a guy wanting to buy it and the whole choke thing happened. Hence the confusion.

Trouble shooting 101, Compression test, Open air gap spark test, Fuel diagnostics, Everything is pointing to a lean running fuel issue, Are all fuel line connections secure,no air leaks? Is float set properly on carb.

Did you install a new gasket when you pulled the carb? I just sounds like a vacuum leak to me. The gasket for the nozzle in the center of the float bowl is another possibility and often overlooked when rebuilding a carb

replaced the carb gasket(which didn't seem bad). cleaned the fuel filter. replaced the fuel with fresh.
now it wont run at all without carb cleaner. about to give up on it. it ran beautifully two weeks ago. I am perplexed, to say the least

As far as the carb cleaner, I don't actual run it on it. Just a touch to get it to fire.
The ignition, I haven't checked into yet, as it fired and ran a shirt time ago. I suppose I'll tear into it and check the point gap and such. I will also need to get a compression tester and check that out as well.

Pull the fitting going into the fuel tank and clean it good with acetone and a fine wire brush. Put a package of metal BBs in the fuel tank and slosh them around with some water to scrub the inside of the tank out good then you can pick the BBs out with a magnetic wand. Put some teflon tape on the threads of the fitting and get it nice and tight. I would put money on the strainer in the tank is plugged?

I had a 4 horse mariner with a tank mounted on engine that did the same issue many years ago, rust in tank that kept plugging a inline filter after running a short while, Had to flush tank numerous times to rid of problem
