Stalling when shifting into gear...

This is a 2003 Mercruiser 3.0 with an Alpha 1 Gen 2. I just bought it, took it out for a cruise on the water and it seemed ok, stalled a few times and was a little tempermental. I noticed a blue gear lube leak.

I separated the upper and lower and diagnosed the problem to be the O-ring under the shift rod bearing assembly. I also replaced the little seal between the upper and lower, the impeller and gaskets on the water pump.

After putting everything back together and putting all the gear oil back in, I had no leaks (yaay).

I had trouble starting (getting a clicking noise and nothing), but I am attributing that to some bad connections on the starter solenoid.

I took her out on the water and she started immediately, but now as soon as I put her in gear, she stalls. I tried a dozen times. I could start her immediately, but even when not in gear, she would stall after 5 seconds or so.

I assume this to be a fuel filter. Here's the question, why would shifting into gear make her stall immediately if it was the fuel filter? Is it possible, I screwed something else up when taking her apart?

Start by finding out why your engine doesn't run for more than 5 seconds. Then find out why it doesn't shift. Sure change the filter it cannot hurt and would not be luxury, but it may not fix anything. You may have screwed the shifter taking apart the outdrive, you can try to shift it without the engine running, having someone turn the prop with their hands, you will see if it goes back in forth through forward/neutral/reverse.

Get a pair of earmuffs so you don't have to go to the river/lake everytime you want to try it.
