"I have a 2002 240 Explorer Sport DeckBoat, with a stalling Volvo Penta 5.0GXi-B engine.

After sitting for 2 months, the boat starts up fine. It runs until it warms up and then it starts to stall like it is running out of gas at idle or low speeds only.

Just before it starts to stall, it sounds like the fuel pump starts to make a whining noise (very high pitched). It is also worth noting that the electric fuel pump gets very hot to the touch.

If I am cruising at high speeds, there is no problem, it never stalls. Only at idle or low speeds.

I have changed the fuel filter, filled the gas tank, and put a number of additives in the fuel. I have had the boat out a number of times since the problem started, and it is always the same thing.

Any Suggestions?"

"Well I found the problem.

"Well I found the problem.

I took the entire Fuel Cell off and took it apart, even though it is supposed to be non servicable. I found the water coolant inlet nipple to the fuel cell plugged with salt water scale.

The fuel cell wasnt getting any water through it to cool it and at low speed and idle the fuel cell must have been vaporlocking.

At higher speeds I had no trouble because the rate of fresh fuel through the cell must have cooled it a enough not to vapor lock.

"Joe, I have a volvo fuel cell

"Joe, I have a volvo fuel cell that is also making noise, seems its getting louder and louder. Can you tell me how you took yours apart and where the water coolant inlet nipple located? Is your fuel cell the one with a low pressure, high pressure pump, water separator and a water reservoir all in one unit?"
