my dad has a 135HP off shore 1998 Mercury optimax engine on his sea pro fishing boat. There was zero fuel pressure and no pump run at key on. he checked with several people around columbia SC area and every one told him 1500.00-4000.00$ to repair it. said it would need injectors, rails, high pressure pump, low pressure pump, and injectors and block pump. before they even looked at it?????
I asked him to bring me the boat before taking it to the stealership and so he did. he had been working on it for a few weeks off and on. I attempted to straight wire the pumps to isolate them as the culprit. when they failed to run I disassembled the VST and found the stale fuel had seized the pumps. i removed one injector and tested it. It was fine but the fuel was very stale. I drained the tank of its 55 gallons of fuel. It did not exhibit the stale odor and i have been using the fuel in two vehicles for a few weeks. I have had fuel with some moisture in the ethanol that created hard starting but this fuel shows no signs of decreased octane rating. The fuel was stabilized with some marine type stabilizer, it was 2 years old. I moved on to the pumps. I filled the pumps with GM top engine cleaner and toggled the polarity back and forth a few times and the pump spun up like a mad bee. I submerged the pump in a cup of fuel and flushed the cleaner out of it. this worked for both pumps. I cleaned the needle and seat of the VST float bowl and reassembled . after reassembling them the boat started right up. we took it to the lake and it ran great with the exception of no water stream from the tell tale stream. installed a water pump kit and now have 10 psi water pressure at idle. i am sharing this info because i didn't find anyone that had cleaned the pumps good bad or indifferent. I have been told that yopu can cross refference the fuel pump number cast on the pump and get a MUCH cheaper replacement from the auto parts store. It is after all just a walbro pump.
