**Squeeze bulb...carb still spits gas...new...

Hello. This is a 91 5hp Gamefisher/Force engine. Gas flows out of the carb when I squeeze the bulb. Only thing that it could be was the needle and seat? I just put in a NEW needle/seat and the same thing happens. Then I realized when I squeeze the bulb...the gas is forced through the main jet inside the fuel bowl...up and out the mouth of the carb. So whenever I squeeze the bulb, the carb gets flooded.
The couple times when I did get the damn thing started, it speeds up....then slows down...over and over. I adjusted the float according to the service manual.
I am dazed and confused with this. Sure would appreciate any knowledge out there.
Thanks!

When you replaced the needle. You sure it was the same size? You change both the needle and seat? Make sure the float is set almost level when the carb is turned upside down. Hook a hose to the carb so you can blow through it. GENTLY(pump pressure is low) blow through it as you try to set the float. If it's set right it wouldn't allow air through.

The carb still does the same thing with the new needle and seat and with the old needle/seat. Float is set parallel with body of carb. I blew through it and air stops when I set the float. The gas pushes up through the main jet into and out the mouth of the carb. I don't get it.
????????????????????

I'm at wits end with this engine. I just put another new needle and seat and float in the carb. The float is all plastic and can't be adjusted....got it from Boats.net, and THEY SUCK!!!! Just before I bolted the carb back on, about 6x I blew in the fuel line inlet and checked to see if the needle was seating properly and it worked just fine. Again I blew air through all the holes...no trash in fuel bowl. I bolt the damn carb on and start pumping the ball(very lightly) and gas comes out the vent hole on top of the carb. Engine would only run a few seconds and quit. I did this 20x...trying to adjust the mixture screw. Every time I pulled the rope...a little squirt of gas would come out of the vent hole on top. I put the gas tank on the top of a step ladder and the gas kept running out of the vent hole on top of carb. I'm goin nuts with this!!!!
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi, so you have replaced the needle and seat numerous times but have you checked the float to see if it does float? i used to rebuild carbys on cars and the material the float is made out of can turn poris and allow fuel to be absorbed and wont actualy float when bowl is full and close the needle and seat. get a bucket of your fuel and chuck the float in it and see what happens. or shake the float and listen for any sloshing of fuel inside. I agree this is a needle and seat/ float issue. with the needle and seat set correctly and a good float NO fuel should enter.

When you fit the needle and seat there will be some kind of spring between the needle and float. when setting the float level the sping shouldabout 1/3 or 1/2 compressed and the needle making contact with the seat. when the float is at a horizontal level, if the float is not level very gently bend the tab on the float where the needle sits to obtain the horizontal position.

hope this helps

Depending on the model? It "might" have a spring in the float assy. Model# Serial#??? Try readujusting the float and bending it a little higher? And Boats . net is one of the worst places to buy parts. A few years ago they were really good. Then they insalled a new computer program and it went to h e ll FAST!! NO follow up.No comunications and a poor staff that don't give a crap (Chris, the supervisor).

Guys....thanks for replying but I guess you skipped over what I said in my first sentence that the float is new and is ALL plastic and it can't be adjusted. The hinge part of it is ALL plastic. Pretty dumb if you ask me. And the needle isn't made to have a spring. This model is 225.587504....1991 5hp...Gamefisher/Force/Mercury. Plus I put the old float back in and it still does the same damn thing. What gets me is like I said.....I blow through the fuel fitting on the carb and then turn the carb upside down and the needle closes every single time....just like it should. Then I bolt the carb on and same crap happens. I found no cracks in the carb. The new float floats just fine in gas. I've had that carb off at least 20x by now. I don't know what to do next. Dazed and confused!

Hi again, what your saying does not make any sense. I have never seen a fully plastic float. and just because it is new dosent mean it is set correctly. Looking at the parts breakdown http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc2/Force/5%20H.P.%20%281988-1995%29/1988-A%20THRU%201992-B/CARBURETOR%20%2889B%20THRU%2092B%29/parts.html its a little vauge. Any chance you could take some pictures? does the needle have a ball bearing where it contacts the float. any pictures would help. When you are blowing through the fuel line you mentioned you are turning the carby upside down? try blowing through the fuel line with the carby in the postion it is installed while lifting the float upwards. You should not be able to blow through it at the horizontal position,. Have you tried blowing compressed air through the fuel inlet port of the carby while blocking the seat. It may be possible the carby is cracked.

OK here's the float pic. I called Mercury and they said the info on this float says it might not be perfectly horizontal but it is not critical, and is not adjustable. I have blown through the fuel inlet with the carb upside down and right side up and needle closes every time. There is no ball bearing for the needle.
I will try your idea using compressed air later today.
Thankyou!!

stop going nuts and get a good used carb off ebay! take the old one and let a proffesional lose their mind figuring it out while you cruise around having fun! If its not rebuildable for some reason they wont be charging much if they cant fix it!, doesnt sound like its worth the aggravation really? or splurge and get a proffesionally rebuilt carb with warranty!

Hey Truckerx.....I took your great advice and ordered a brand new carb! You're right about the aggrivation....it's not worth it. Damn carb has eaten a hole in me. I can't afford this but good thing I have a credit card. What gets me is the carb is so simple.....what could cause it to be such a problem? How can it get worn out? Anyway...if a new carb doesn't fix the problem...then the engine will get a deep six salute. I'll post a message if I have good....or....bad results.
Thankyou.

So you have you bought the carby allready?............been thinking. following the the fuel dilivery from fuel tank into the engine its got me thinking that its possibly not in the carb at all. Im not totally familar with fuel pumps on your model engine but considering its a small engine and requires low fuel volume it may be worth checking the fuel pump. If your sure the needle and seat is set correctly. I would have a look at the fuel pump for any broken check valves, springs and diaphrams. If your priming the fuel bulb that is allowing large quantitys of fuel to be pumped via the fuel pump and then to the carb. this large quantity make have too much pressure and blows the needle of its seat flooding the carb..................................just trying to help. rather find the fault than throw money at things. you might buy a new carb and have the same problem.

Thanks Leigh. The fuel pump has a brand new kit in it. That's one of the first things I did when I got this engine. The new carb is on it's way, but I will take apart the fuel pump to check it.....you never know right?
Thanks again. I really appreciate you guys taking time out to help me out.

The check valves don't regulate pressure. they regulate flow. They stop the gas from back feeding.I have 2 of those white floats. They are USELESSSSS!!!! A customer tried to fix his 125's carbs with the white ones and they did the same thing. Luckily I had a pair of good carbs. I replaced the white with the original floats and it worked great. Most ties the carb only needs a cleaning, not new parts. Check the seat for damage. The needle for damage. Some seats have an o-ring in the bottom.Cleaning with any soak or solvent can swell the seat and it can pop out. The needle's tip can get a groove in it.

Like I said...I just put another brand new needle and seat. The seat doesn't have an o-ring, it has a skinny copper washer. The previous kits also had the copper washer.
I put the old float back in the carb and again....gas came out the mouth and the vent hole when I lightly pumped the bulb.
Yesterday I took the carb apart again....put the new plastic float in again...blew through the fuel fitting and as usual the needle seated just fine. I bolted the carb back on...squeezed the bulb 6-7x....no gas came out of the carb. Then tried to start the damn thing for 45 mins., then squeezed the bulb and gas started coming out of the carb. That's when I decided to order a new carb. Plus the carb is very clean inside. I also blew compressed air through the fuel fitting...while plugging the seat and found no cracks. Why it does what it does.....I'll never know. A basic/simple carb and it got the best of me.
Thankyou!!!

O.K. just popped in on this conversation, I had similar problems and after several tries at doing everything suggested, I replaced the gaskets on the carb. and this fixed my problem. You have a gasket inside the bowl and outside the bowl. If the inside gasket fails the gas just keeps coming. Try this and it may be the problem

I sold that damn boat....as is. Thanks for the reply but I don't think the 3 fuel bowl gaskets has anything to do with gas coming out the mouth of the carb.

Just to clarify, The o-ring I'm talking about is in the bottom of the seat and the needle rests on it.All seats should have the skinny copper washer.

Hello people who know what you’re talking about! I have a similar problem, my 50hp 87 force runs at like half speed and bogs a bit, when I have it at full throttle. It seems to be getting too much gas because when I take the cover off gas will come out the carb if it’s trimmed up. Along with that the ball doesn’t get hard very much. What is the issue or what should I look at fixing?

You opened a 12 year old post, not good.

The first 5 posts in the Force forum has tips and trick to help with your motor.

If you have a problem? start your own post and include all the info you can gather.

The squeezie: it's supposed to get hard when you squeeze it to help start. After the initial start the ball can go soft, it shouldn't necessarily stay hard
It's only job is to help draw fuel from the tank and fill the system with fuel. Then it's supposed to just set there. It has a one way valve that allows fuel up but not return to the tank. If it does go back to the tank??? get a new one.
Fuel from the front of the carb: the float might be bad or need adjusting.
The needle/seat might be bad or need cleaning or the float needs adjusting.
Read the first 5 posts.
Good luck, you'll need 3 maybe 5 post to add pics.
