Sputters and shakes

2004 Johnson 115 HP 2 stroke Bombardier J115plsrc. Got stuck in the mud and sucked up lots of sand. It overheated. I flushed out all the sand and replaced the water pump. The HOT light stays on now, even when it first starts up. It starts and runs fine until 2500 rpms then shakes and sputters violently. What could be wrong?
 
Going into S.L.O.W. mode ( overheating ) time to investigate / look for blockage between pump and intake screens.----Or need to flush engine water jackets.
 
I flushed it out every way possible with water, compressed air, and a vacuum. I finally got it to pee. I read that debris in the cooling system can cause the temperature sensor to fail. Does this make sense?
