Speedo not working

Hi guys...

Finally got the boat in the water today, its ONLY been a year and a half since it last floated. Last year was crazy and it never got wet.

So that means that it was last winterized in the fall of 2008. I took it in that time to have it done so that the mech could drop the outdrive and check out the gimble and u joints. Put it in the water today and every thing runs and works excellent except that the speedo doesn't work. Is there a chance that he forgot to put something back on inside? Is this a pitot tube or is there an electrical pickup for the speedo? I'll call him in the next day or two and talk to him about it, but I'm sure he'll say "a year and a half huh?, sure sure. It just stopped working now and you're trying to pin it on me".

What can I try myself as it is now up at the cottage and I will only see it on weekends. It won't come back till the Fall.

Its a 2005 Tahoe, 4.3 L, 190 hp, TKS, Alpha 1 drive

Thanks

Good to hear from you. I've not worked on the A1 Gen. II but do remember some discussion about the pickup for the speedometer is built into the OD. Find the rubber hose inside the transom and follow it.

Maybe someone else will chime ie for you. The man that worked on it may tell you what to look for.

Thanks Guy, good to hear from you too.

Looks like no one here wants to answer questions anymore. I talked to the mech that worked on it and he said that there is a possibility that he left the hose off. He said that it is easy to put back on from the outside and that the drive doesn't have to come apart again if that indeed is the problem. I'll check it out this coming week end.

Thanks

Trim the drive all the way up (Trailer position). On the front end of the drive above the anti-cavitaion plate, there is quick disconnet for the pitot tube sensing lineto the speedo on the dash. Probably not connected. Should just slip on the turn a quarter turn to lock in place.

I just bought my 2nd boat, had a Chris Craft lancer for 27 years. Grandfather and Dad did all the work. Now I am on my own to "Get er done", Boat is a Celebrity 190 with Mercruiser I/O 228, 305 ci ( looks just like a Chevy) has a Rochester Quadrajet 4bbl carb. I have had her in the water all summer, trailored her while on vacation came back to water in the aft of boat. Lost starter, bought a new one. Drained the oil out had some water in it. do I need to drain the lower unit oil and replace? Would it have water too. I hear its a one way seal not sure if I have water in flywheel area because was on starter and do not want to ruin new starter. I also had some ground issues that fixed some light issues, tacometer works, speedometer and Fuel guage does not. I guess I have multiple items to work on here, any suggestions, opinions are appreciated. I am ordering a Service manual for it this week. thanks WB

Welcome. You should always start your own thread and not tag onto another; it gets confusing.

What year boat/engine? Did you travel w/the drain plug in it? Speedometer could be a pinched or disconnected airhose. Fuel sender is bad or wiring frayed and/or corroded--DISCONNECT the battery before working on it.

How much water in the oil? Was the oil creamy? A few ounces can come from a cold running engine. More than that could be from a cracked block, exhaust manifold or riser or one of the aforementioned items' gasket. Pull the spark plugs and crank the engine a few seconds. If water comes out then suspect the exhaust system or intake manifold. If no water comes out of the plug holes then suspect the block has a crack.

Thanks, The mech did say that the hose would go on with just a quarter turn. But he didn't say where it was located. I figured it was around the front somewhere - thanks

The sad part about all of this is that I have a full set (3) of factory manuals that I got off of ebay about 2 years ago. You would think I could find those suckers in the house somewhere. The things are as thick as telephone books and shouldn't be able to hide so easily. They're probably sitting with the $20 bill, my old set of keys, a 13 mm socket, favorite base ball hat, and everything else I can't find in the last year. I can hear it all laughing at me from in the basement somewhere. grrrrr.
