How often are you guys changin

How often are you guys changing the plugs in your motor? I have a 150 XR6 and I just checked mine and other than a little oilythey llook O.K.

I have no way to tell if they are in top shape. Should I just go ahead and change them every year? I've been using the NGK plugs that were in it the first time I changed them.

"You will get a number of different opinions on this one. Myself, I change plugs once a year (unless they need it more often - verified by checking).

Most manuals will call for once a year or every 100 hours whichever occurs first. Guys will say you don't need to do it that often, but for the cost I think it's worth it. Often times a bad plug or plug(s) looks like another problem - leading to time wasted troubleshooting or worse yet replacing parts that aren't broke.

You can buy plugs by the (mini-case) from many wholesale places - you end up getting a dozen for less than 2 bucks a piece - making it more economical.

The exception is the new DFI motors such as Merc's OPTIMAX - these and others eat spark plugs and require changing at 50 hour intervals...."

"Hey K.T. - Do you have the gapless plugs on that motor? if so, change them when the center electrode starts to wear away. You could get a few years out of each set. BTW - you can buy those gapless plugs at most auto parts stores, and save a couple of bucks on each one."
