"Just bought 95 Cajun Bayboat with above ref outboard. Pulled the plugs and there was no ground electrode, never seen this before. Are these better than traditional? Less fouling, etc.

What's the best spark plug type to use? The local marine shop gave me traditional plugs and said to gap to 0.030. THoughts? Please advise and thanks in advance."

"Carlos, you have found "surface gap" plugs in your motor.

They are often recommended for "sustained high speed operations" on certain models.

Looking at the charts I have for your particular model they only have Champion QL78YC plugs gapped at .030" as the recommended plug with no alternate listing for a surface gap which indicates the designer/engineer did not recommend a surface gap for that model.

While many OMC motors list a recommended gapped or an alternate surface gap plug, your motor is not one of them. I would suspect yours was changed by someone who thought it would be ok because other OMC's run those plugs - stick with what the book calls for...."

"Thanks Graham, I agree. I always stick with what the OEM engineered. I'll get the correct plugs gapped and installed. May have some more questions after getting her running and wet tested.
