Spark plug wires

"Next on my winter 'to do list' are plug wires for my 440s. I've read a few past posts, looking for any new pointers before I purchase.

Are there any performance issues between marine v. auto (besides price)? I would like to have the angle boots. I anticipate the blank stare from my auto parts person if I ask for 'marine' wires instead of wires for a 440.

Thanks in advance!"

"As I understand it, the factory routed the plug wires thru the little space between exhaust manifold and the valve covers. So the wires get to rub against a hot manifold and a greasy valve cover, for about 40 years. (Or until they short to something, and the motor misses a beat) When I redid mine, I got plug wires that were long enough to route over and around the manifold. I got them from NAPA, and they actually seemed to know what I meant."

Good stuff. Is there a performance difference between marine/auto? I will probably get the already made up wires for ease.

Thanks

"If you're interested in performance, you'll get more satisfaction from replacing the points and condenser with a solid state ignition, and a low impedance coil. I went from 20kV to 50kV when I did that. In fact, the higher voltage was the reason I discovered I needed new wires: At 50kV, I could see arcing all over the place with the old wires. Especially at night/in the dark."

"My 440s have the stock electronic ignition already. Hopefully, I will be 'OK' with new wires."
