" I have a 1980 Johnson 35 HP. I rebuilt the carb, replaced the fuel pump, the plugs, and the head gasket. It was running before but not real good. So anyway, now it will start, run for a few revolutions, and then die. Sometimes it pops when it dies, sometimes not. The compression is at about 145 psi for both pistons, there is good spark at the plugs, and good fuel supply from the pump. Is it in the carb or what. Im at a loss at the moment. Any ideas???? "

Sounds like carb adjustment to me. Maybe someone will give you the init. carb adjustment specs. If you have a repair manual follow the carb. adjust specs.

" 1977 Evenrude, 25 HP - How can I determine if one of the spark plug coils or power pack is weak? The engine smokes some. When I take off coil lead from #1 (top) spark plug the engine runs the same. After reinstalling #1 coil lead to spark plug I removed #2 coil wire from #2 spark plug and the engine dies. How can I determine if it is a spark plug coil or the power pack? "

" George, you need to do the basics.Check compression. You can swap the coils and see if the fault follows the coil. You can check the spark strength ,It must jump a gap of 3/8",anything less is a problem. You may also have a broken/held open reed valve. "
