"I took apart a spare set of V6 Buick Heads the other week, and discovered spacers underneath the Valve Springs. Anyone know if this is the norm, or?????? One Valve had a bit of an edge on it at the top. I had to file this off to get the Valve through the guide easily. Thanks in advance

I thought every engine had them. Can't seat a spring against cast iron.... it will chew into the casting.

"Thanks Hy Stat, I'd never seen this before in any other engine I've ever torn down.I thought it was an attempt to increase the pressure on the spring to make the valve close tighter. The springs in these heads are whipped (out of square). One valve had a burr on the tip I had to file down to get it to come out through the seat. The Valves appear to be strait, according to my Sine Bar. I made it in College. It's ground to a tolerance of + or - 1 10,000th of an inch over 6 inches."

"hmmm. actually, I don't see any reference to spring seats in the parts book for the 155 Buick, but maybe the heads have been rebuilt.
The valve springs are only a few dollars each, so I doubt any shimming would have been done.
Maybe if the valves were recessed into the seats someone tried to shim them...never heard of that, but how do the seats look?"

"Have seen that from time to time, but never on an ORIGINAL marine engine.
The trick was used to increase spring load on engines with low-lift cam lobes and long durations. The danger is that if someone changes the cam from the 'original' to a marine when converting a car engine to marine without removing the 'shim', the spring bottoms and the result is a 'burr' like mentioned.
Replace with 'original' spring set-up for the cam installed!"

"<< Replace with '

"<< Replace with 'original' spring set-up for the cam installed!>>

You mean replace new springs withOUT the shims?

These heads are spares, and not whats in the boat."

"I must seem stupid this morning (not much sleep between band gigs the weekend), but I tore these heads down to have them tanked.I mean to replace the springs ONLY when re-assembling, with new springs that are called for by Spec. The block these heads came off of is toast."

"Was the engine these heads go

"Was the engine these heads got of installed between 4 wheels (car), or inside some bath-tub like (boat)glass-fiber design?
If you intend to fit those heads on another engine, use the same spring set up that is on the 'new' engine!
Check however that valve disc and stems have the same diameter, that might vary between 'land' and 'sea'."

"The engine these came off of, was in a Boat.It still was connected to the Int. with front engine mount. It still had boat wood attached. I wanted a block, what I got was the heads, Intake, and all tinwork. The block was rust scored too deep in one cylinder.Forgot to save the Cam."

Unknown. The one head DOES have an OMC tag on it.It's too damaged to read. will try with a magnifying glass.

"Even if I go back to the late

"Even if I go back to the late 60 - early 70, the springs are noted as 1-piece and no separate washer/spacer at the bottom.
What BRP state in their catalog is that parts are available from Kaiser-Jeep dealers!
Suggest you search for a CJ5 'specialist' in your area. The HP rating seems to be similar in both marine and auto configuration as std, which should indicate same major parts."

"67-72 same motor. He posted it's a OMC. Thats the year gap on a 155. Kaiser, if i remember correctly.

Now what exactly you want to do with these heads?

You have a 155 in your boat, cause you posted " Spare heads " ?"

"I was just tearing them apart

"I was just tearing them apart for sh#ts and giggles.
I'm having them tanked, then re=assembling using new springs, As spares."
