Soot under the cowling 1996 Johnson 8hp

Leaking exhaust or powerhead base gasket, probably not running well with the cowling on either. Do you see a concentration in a particular area? Could also be flywheel rubbing on ignition components.

It was uniformly spread on the power head base/ plastic skirt and inside cover of the cowling. It make sense that it is a gasket at the base of the power head. Thank you!
