Sometimes not always "STUCK" Engine. Why?

Good Morning all. I just joined this Web Site and here is my question and I am open to all suggestions as to why. Here is my issue. I just got a 1953 outboard, a Gale 5U10. I got it cheap because it was stuck. I got it home & messed with it just a bit and it freed up. I then checked the spark and had it. It would not start because the points were worn and out of time. I put in new points, set the timing and it started with the first pull. It does not keep on running, dirty carb (no problem in cleaning it) Here is the issue, After it sets for a while it gets "STUCK" again. I have never had an engine do this before. Note: It is the model that does have the "Clutch" and no reverse. I have not yet separated the lower unit from the Power Head to see if this will reveal which direction the problem lays. Any and all suggestions will be welcomed. Thank you in advance. Earl W.

As per your post, remove the lower unit to determine whether the jamming is within the lower unit or the powerhead.
After the jammed unit is revealed, it is a case of dismantling the lower unit... OR... the powerhead somewhat in order to find the cause of the jamming... ie... water seepage to internal powerhead area, lower unit seals failing, whatever.

. Thank You joereeves for your reply. I hate to take things apart, if no new parts are available, so I was just thinking about this issue and perhaps if the problem is just dried out grease and/or oil in the head, perhaps an easy fix for the power head would be just to fill it all up with a good grade degreaser and let it soak in and then flush it out real good. Thanks again Earl W.

Hello again joereeves. Another thing about this is that right now is that I am not concerned the lower end gear box sticking, because when I disengaged the "Clutch" the problem did not go away, however the "Water Pump" impeller could still be broken up and therefore the pieces sometimes getting together and jamming the head. Thanks again Earl W.

There are two springs in that neutral clutch area (in the lower unit). One is the clutch spring and the other is a shock absorber spring which releases the drive if you hit an obstruction. If the shock absorber spring is broken, it will lock up the motor, or nearly so. Messing around with it often will unjam it..until it jams again.

I didn't know about this possibility, but will sure check it out. Thank You Earl W.

Thank You kimcrwbrt for your reply. Right now I have the gear box off and the engine is still stuck. Right now I still need to get the screws out so that I can get to the water pump. Thanks again Earl
