I HAVE BEEN TO EVERY BOAT MECHANIC IN THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY AND THE ALL ITCHING THEIR ASSES. I want change my oil in my drives. no one knows what kind of oil to use or how many ports to fill and drain I get differnt answers from everyone. It is 1985 omc stringer stern drive. I am being told that the higher and lower takes to differnt kinds of oil.don't use syntheic. I am more confused now then when I left this morning
How can I tell of it is electric or manual cable shift? This seem to be a issue

You need 80-90 weight gear oil in all 3 drives. Me i use the cheapest blue bottle stuff in wal-mart. You can buy anything with a picture of a boat on the bottle.

Off the top of my head the intermediate takes 7-8 oz depends on how much runs out everytime it burps, you drain it by removing the drain plug that is located under the starboard side high up close to the steering gear. You remove the big plug that is located behind the drive as you are looking towards the stern. Let it drain. when drained fully install the drain plug with a new plastic washer any evinrude dealer will have it.

Then with the long tip slowly allow gear oil to fill the large fill hole. Make sure there is no air left by allowing it to sit before closing that hole up.

Now on the starboard side there is a drain plug in the upper about 8-10 inchs down from the top. Remove the plug, and the dipstick that is on the very top of the drive is it about a 3/4 inch plug.

Allow to drain out the bottom when done screw in the fitting in the bottom drain plug of the pump you bought at the evinrude dealer, and pump in a6 oz maybe a little more till you see it come out the dipstick hole on top.

Screw in the top plug, and then remove the fitting of the pump and install the drain plug with a new plastic washer you purchased at the evinrude dealer.

Now all the way down on the starboard side is a drain plug almost on the bottom of the drive, remove the drain plug, then about 8 inchs up is the vent plug for the lower, remove the plug. Drain and then install the fitting from the pump and pump 26 oz into the lower till you see oil come out the vent oil above it. Install the vent plug with a new plastic washer, then remove the fitting of the pump and install the very bottom plug with a new plastic washer you bought at the evinrude dealer.

Ok now your done. What i do usually is leave the dipstic plug out to let it burp and the lower vent plug out to burp. Then i check the dipstick plug if low add from the top, the vent on the lower i stick a wire in if low i add from the vent. The intermediate i leave out also to let you guessed it to burp if low i add somemore.

Did you understand everything i posted ?

Oh is fully mechainical shift if it's a 85' post a pic and i will tell you for sure take the pic from the side.
