I think I'll try and do one carb just to see how it goes. I noticed after trying to synch my carbs after installing the electronic ignitor that the rear carb is not performing like it should. I set the timing and noticed the idle was low. So I set the idle on the front carb and then as I increased idle on the rear carb I noticed it bogging down intead of increasing. I also noticed gas leaking from the bottom of the carb. I also noticed more wild swings in rpms. Stil a PITA. So I'll give it a try.

If rebuilding them doesn't help has anybody ever transplanted a 2 bbl downdraft say a Carter or Holly onto a volvo. I'm getting a little tired of this multi-carbs business. Especially with carbs that are known to be sketchy in the first place. One carb is a hell of lot more reliable and if the CFMs are similar it should have similar performance and fuel consumption. If I can find a Volvo downdraft manifold I could have a friend mill an adaption plate for me no problem. Just a thought. Any advice is appreciated.

I found that once I rebuilt my solex sidedrafts they performed fine. Engine runs great. It is a very simple carb.
For the cost of a kit and an hour's labor I'd try a rebuild first.

"Thanks for the encouragement

"Thanks for the encouragement Jon. I should get my rebuild kit in any day, I will definitely go that route for now. Do you still get the wild swings in RPMs at idle? El Pesc said he never figured that one out even after rebuilding his. It sucks coming into the dock or a marina when the engine won't idle right."

"I know nothing about Solex ca

"I know nothing about Solex carbs, but the SU's in pushrod Volvos have a nasty habit of wearing out the throttle shafts. This results in air getting sucked around the throttle shaft and they get impossible to tune... until you put a bushing in the carb body and drill it for a new throttle shaft. Normal rebuild kits don't include these parts but many, many SU carbs in Volvo cars have been changed to downdraft 2bbl Webers, with a decrease in performance, for this exact reason.

Most vintage Volvo experts agree that a pair of well-tuned, not worn-out SU's will out-perform a Weber any day of the week. My gut instinct is that if you can get your Solex's right, you will be much happier with the performance than if you bolt on an aftermarket carb."
