"I havent taken my boat( bayliner 20' mercruiser alpha 1) out in about 6 weeks now and I began winterizing it today...after treating the fuel I started it up and alot of smoke came from the sterndrive, where the prop is...kind of darker smoke...after about 30 seconds, it stalled out and I couldnt get it started again...the starter just couldnt seem to crank it solid...it ran great the last time I had it out...no problems... what could this smoke mean...??? I have not seen this before...It sat , covered for about 6 weeks but thats happened before ...

"first things first...check the oil level and see if its contaminated. If milky colored, you've got water in the oil and maybe a cracked head or head gasket. If its runny and smells of gas, you got possiably cracked ring(s). Next pull the plugs, and check condition. try and also spin the motor over by hand at the harmonic balancer. If it spins, you should then check compression. this will tell you several things. Cam is still spinning with crank and timing / timeing chain is not the issue. if compression is gone on any cylinder, then things go south from here. Try this and repost what you find...."

"Aaron has some good points. Black smoke upon startup to me indicates a flooded engine or stuck choke. If the plugs are black w/soot, start w/the carb.

"I've seen numerous mercruiser engines with choke adjustment issues... issues that only seem to show up when the weather is cold.

Your choke may not be stuck but just not opening enough. Charge the battery and try starting it. When it fires up and starts to run rough and smokes, push the choke open slightly and it should smooth out. Follow manual for adjusting choke by loosening the three scews and twisting the thermostatic choke spring housing slightly."
