Smoking Problem, 8hp Merc

My 1998 Merc. 2 stroke, low hours, starts great, runs great but when trolling down to low RPM, it smokes quite heavily, even after warmed up and run for hours. 50:1 Gas/oil mixture is very carefully measured by the gallon and only Mercury oil is used. Choke also is closed and turned to low speed. Could the problem in any way be a faulty thermostat?? Many thanks for you advise and suggestions.

Hotter engine temp should reduce smoke some--check the temp of the engine at the thermostat w/a laser thermal gun to see what the temp is. 13 yr old T'stat may be worn out. 50:1 premix is going to smoke at idle speed.
