"Mercury 90, done 17hrs. Went fishing and cought the berley rope in the prop. Switched the motor off and removed the rope. As soon as I started it up again it started smoking (so much that I decided to get off the water). Everybody tells me it is a two-stroke and will smoke. The fact is that it didn't smoke up to the incident."

"did the engine load up and di

"did the engine load up and die or cough? sounds like it just bogged down. smoke is just oil, and oil is a good thing."

"No it did not die, I switched

"No it did not die, I switched it off as soon as I heard it load up. My concern is that it didn't smoke before and now it does. Can it be an oil seal or something. I had it looked at , at an agent and they also serviced it. Compression is ok."

"I think the question is, what

"I think the question is, what can go wrong when you get the rope in the prop?"

If the rope wraps tightly enou

If the rope wraps tightly enough around the prop at high revs it can either stall the engine spin/rip the prop on the hub or break some thing in the gearbox. I would think if it was to break something it would break some thing in the gearbox before any damage would be caused to the top end! Would anyone else agree with that?

"Henk, A rope in the prop sho

"Henk, A rope in the prop should not cause the motor to smoke more or less. You should spin the prop (engine off) and see that it turns smooth. If it does, start it up and let it run a bit. Does that motor use premixed gasoline or does it have oil injection?"

"Thanks, it is an oil injectio

"Thanks, it is an oil injection. I also noticed that there is oil running down the leg on the back, was not there before. The motor is a 2006 and still under warranty."

"25 march post u said u took i

"25 march post u said u took it to agent..they serviced it, now oil running down leg...maybe they left a swab or scalpel inside, let them re-check...."

"the oil running down the leg

"the oil running down the leg is just unburnt fuel/oil mix. normally that fuel mix goes out the prop as exhaust. since you shut down the engine after it was loaded up it didn't have a chance to clean itself out. The only other type of oil in the engine is for the gear box. smell it, if it has a very strong rotten egg smell then take it to the dealer. if not, fire it and move on."

"Thanks for the support, I wil

"Thanks for the support, I will put it on the water again this weekend and monitor the oil use to fuel."
