"Well as I have stated in previous posts, I got a boat that has been sitting since July of last year. I cleaned out the fuel tank today, drained the carbs, and Changed Fuel Filter. Started right up, It seems to smoke a lot at first and tapper off to a steady lighter smoke. I did notice a little bit of gray oily stuff on the prop. This is out of the water with the ear muffs on. Any Ideas of what that might be? Or is that normal for a engine that has sat?"

"Mark, that is normal. That gray mess is quite common in the spring on motors that have been winter stored. After a good run it goes away.

Alternately, to help it out, you may want to pick up a spray can of "Power Tune" from Merc. Just follow the instructions. It's designed to "decarb" the motor, but have found it great in getting out the "boogies" that have settled in while the motor has sat..."

"Ok cool, I figured it might be normal, But I am no boat expert. I will have to pick me up a can of that power tune stuff at the boat dealer. So besides, Fuel filter, Water pump, And power tune, What else should be done to a motor that has been sitting a while? Like I said it sounds like it runs good now, I just dont want to get stranded."

"Also one other thing, How can

"Also one other thing, How can I be sure that my oil injection is working? you know how things get when they sit."

You hook up a fuel supply that

You hook up a fuel supply that is mixed 50:1. You then mark your oil tank and monitor oil usage from that tank.If you are satisfied that oil injection is working then run straight fuel. The extra oil during this test will cause extra smoke but it will never ever destroy your motor.

"Yeah that is what I am worrie

"Yeah that is what I am worried about, I just didnt want it to not be working and run straight gas. I mean I am sure it works but I just want to be sure since it has been sitting for 8 months or so. So Running premix with the injection hooked up is ok? I mean if it was working it would be like running 100:1... that wont hurt anything? Just some smoke?"

What???? ----- It will be runn

What???? ----- It will be running at 24:1 or so and that won't hurt your motor.

"ok ok, I told you know nothin

"ok ok, I told you know nothing about outboards. I think on the first time I take it out I am gonna fill the tank half full, and add premix to the tank just to be sure, Then inspect when I get home to see if the injection is working. Thanks for all your help guys."

At this point it looks to me that you are going to run the motor for a test. If you have not replaced the impeller--- have you tested the overheat alarm if so equipped??Sorry --- to me it looks like you are joining the many who want to learn the hard way and that is thru the wallet. You can also test the oil pump output -- it is best to get the factory manual and to follow it to a T .

"Well when you say impeller I

"Well when you say impeller I am assuming you are talking about the water pump?? I am not testing that, That will be replaced before it hits the water. The only thing I will be testing is the oil injection. I am not sure if it has and overheat alarm, I did notice that it has heat sensors on it. I will be getting a manual as soon as I can. what is the best way to test the oil output to your knowledge?"

I know how to test----- It is

I know how to test----- It is best you waited for a manual.

"Well it will a few days to get a manual, I was hoping you could help me out and give me a little info on how to test the output, Thought that is what this site was for. Thanks for all the info you have provided so far."
