I hope someone can help me.I new to boating.I was out in my 1977 fiberform when it started losing power.I could smell burning oil when it completely die.I pulled the cover a smoke came pouring out.The temp shot up but the oil pressure Idiot light never came on.There were no metallic or clunk sounds.Any ideas on what happened?

"Sounds like you overheated and boiled your oil. At this point, there is probably not many options besides rebuilding. Your bearings and rings will have suffered damage and if it hasn't happened yet, your crankshaft will be compromised if you continue running it on these bearings. You probably had sufficient oil pressure, which explains why the idiot light didn't come on, but your oil became overheated which will affect every component that relies on it for lubrication."

"Before you throw in the towel, investigate things a bit. Drain the engine oil and inspect it for metal filings. Will the engine turn over or is it seized? If it turns over, refill the engine oil and execute a compression check. If the results are satisfactory fire it up and determine why the engine overheated.

Having taken many engines apart, it amazes me how many badly worn engines still run. Good luck."

"I'd be real curious what you find. If Mike is right, I'm curious how much, if any, damage you may have sustained."
