So i just bought a boat and it has a 94 15hp merc tiller drive outboard with electric start. Came home and ran it in a tub because i bought it from the original owner who hardly ever used it. Boat and motor are like brand new. Started and ran fine but smoked considerably till warm. Cooling water spat but didn't really pump well till the motor got warm. Never felt the water get too hot. Not nearly enough to make me wince or second guess checking it by hand. On par with a hot shower i guess. But i noticed smoke coming from the backside of the lower end right behind where the support arm for the transom holds onto it. Not a whole lot of smoke but it kind of oozed out. Hopefully the pic uploaded. Also there is milky goo in the lower end. I didn't see any heavy seepage of oil anywhere but there was definitely a bit of it near the seal where the lower unit meets the shaft. I did check the oil right after running it for a while and I'm sure the motor has sat for a long time since running so maybe just old oil? No idea what the previous owner did for maintenance.
Should i just drain and refill and launch her and see if the problem returns before taking it in for seal replacement (assuming that's all it is) or should i rush in to have it done? Also, what's with that smoke? Seems like a strange place to be smoking
