Unfortunately, modern outboards no longer allow you to troubleshoot them with a simple multi-meter and a screwdriver.

In fact, the ECM (engine computer) on most new models "knows" what it wants to see from a given sensor, so even if you unhook the sensor in an attempt to test, the computer will compensate for the fact that it is missing, feeding itself with what it wants to see from that sensor - so even that method of troubleshooting is now gone.

If you plan on keeping the motor for years and doing work on it yourself it may be worth obtaining the software and cables to hook your motor to a laptop or home computer - otherwise, spend the 100 bucks at your local dealer and get it read..."

I should have added this earlier but i could not remember what it said. After a few seconds the message comes up Reserve 100% oil remaining does that mean it is the rerserve oil sensor on top of the oil tank attached to the engine? It is a 2001 150 Optimax if it matters. Also once the sensor is replaced does the message go away or does the smartcraft have to be reset? Thanks very much for the advice.

The 100% is how much oil is left in the backup tank on the motor so you maybe can make it back to the ramp.
‘that’s 4 beeps every 2 minutes. Sometimes the problem isn’t the sensor but a clogged pickup tube at the main reserve tank. Pull the tank and clean the pickup tube end with brake cleaner and reinstall. then test it.
