"Hi there I am new to this site.I hope someone can tell me what is wrong. I have a 1977 johnson 20hp/cv model 20BA77. I noticed sludge comming a hole beside the oil level plug in the bottem leg.I drained the gear case oil and it is clean. The engine runs great, idles good. I can fish with it all day. Any help would be much appreciated thankyou."

Thankyou very much for the imformation. Is there a way that I can find out where the oil mixture is getting in the cooling water?

"It is unburnt 2-stroke oil in the exhaust. This oil again dissolves any soot inside the exhaust system.
Nothing You may do about it, except giving the engine a dose of Sea Foam or engine tuner to clean out the soot from the engine. Then be sure not to over mix the fuel-oil."

Thanks again for the help. I will try the engine tuner and maybe under mix the fuel oil a little bit. when I am finshed running my motor heavy sludge comes out and makes a mess. Also the back of my boat is oily.

What is the operation style? Plugging / trolling along or at least 4k RPM's?

Low RPM's will cause unburnt oil mucking the exhaust as it cools down and sticks everywhere. Two strokers want high RPM's to run nicely.

Always R.T.F.M. when in doubt...

In agreement with all of the above pertaining to mixture. Stick to the 50/1 fuel/oil mixture.
