Sludge from exhaust port

"I have a 2001 Johnson 150hp Seahorse outboard. I have had sporadic rough running over the past few seasons - I suspect from alcohol in the fuel. I have tuned-up engine regularly and changed fuel/water separator to minimize this problem.
However, recently the engine runs very rough at idle, and a black sludge is coming from the exhaust port.
Does anyone have any suggestions for solving the problem? Could it be the VRO pump dumping too much oil into mixture, or a carbon build-up problem?
I have never used fuel additives before. Should I use any once this problem is resolved?"

"Hey, from what you have descr

"Hey, from what you have described, your engine is defintely running rich or over oiling. I would run engine tuner through your engine, it's a johnson/evinrude product, Instructions are located on the aersol can. I would also check out the fuel system, the main cause of a VRO equipped engine over oiling, is retricted fuel supply. Inspect all fuel lines for kinks, check your primer bulb (make sure it doesn't stay in-dented at all while engine is running). If you have a built in fuel tank, inspect your antisiphon valve for any restrictions. With that said, your engine could just be running rich because of your carb adjustments. Could be a few things, but at least i have given you somewhere to start. Hope this helps. Goodluck"
