"Hello all,

Need some help.

"Hello all,

Need some help. I have a 1973ish electric shift. Just replaced the coupler on the flywheel, intermediate shaft and had the upper drive shaft replaced, and the upper resealed, as well as the H2O pump.

Runs well but went out to sea trail and throttle up and it slips at 2000 to 2200 rpm. Seems like it is popping out of gear. This is why I replaced and changed these parts. this is what it was doing prior to replacing the shafts and coupler The parts were definitely warn and the splines were gone

Almost feels like a spun prop, but it is a pin drive prop, which I don't believe has a hub. I could be wrong.

Any ideas or suggestions would be great.

thanks in advance."

"After reading some old posts, it sounds like a possibility could be the forward spring. Just to clarify, I drove the boat around the harbor all day at low RPM with no issue, just at or above 2K RPM.

what is the procedure to check this. I have a manual, but any tricks or short cuts would be appreciated."

"I have not checked the lower unit forward spring yet. just got the boat out of the water and I think this will be the first place I check. I have an extra spring I am kind of hoping it is that easy. Are there any "secrets or tricks" not in the manual, I have a Seloc's.

Do I need to pull the drive off, then remove the swivel housing to get at the forward spring? I cant remember off the top of my head....will read up on it when I get home."

you are wrong. try another prop.

"Thank you, Hy. I pulled the prop and looked at it and the striations from the shear pin being driven in are not lined up with the holes. I assume this would be an indication of the hub rotating. I will be hitting the prop shop tomorrow.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond, I'll post the results"

Spun hub on the prop.
I had

Spun hub on the prop.
I had only ever heard it described but never had it happen. Good call Hy.
If I am ever in Canada I'd like to buy you a beer. That just saved me a lot of grief.....and a bonus the guy that I got the boat from heard it was a bad prop and just gave me (2) extra 14 x 12 and (1) 14 x 11 props
